Fall 2011 Board of Directors Meeting

The fall 2011 Board of Directors Meeting of the Pine Tree Holstein Association was held on Monday, January 9, 2012 at Debbie Keene’s home.   The meeting was called to order at 10:20am by President Chris Kimball.  The secretary’s report was presented in printed form and was accepted after a motion by Peter Waterman and second by Jim Strout.  The treasurer’s report was also in printed form.  Upon a motion by Bill Bullard and second by Jim Strout the report was approved as printed.
The Show Committee report was presented by Jim Strout. He felt the show went well even though numbers were down, due in part to Hurricane Irene.  Bill Taylor of Cedar Lane Farm in New Jersey served as the official judge.  Jim had talked with Curtis regarding any issues the fair has with exhibitors.  The major relates to the dumping of milk.  The fair would like all exhibitors to milk in the parlor and take advantage of getting paid for their milk.  The dialogue has been ongoing with Skowhegan officials regarding the possibly of moving our show to Skowhegan hoping the earlier date might encourage more juniors to participate as the show would be held before school starts.  Steve Fredericks – is new at Skowhegan.  The schedule is full but they are checking where they could fit us in and if so it would be during the fair.  They will hold more discussions and report back to the committee. He also apologized for the confusion surrounding the presentation of the Hugh Briggs award for the Junior Champion of the Junior Show.  Apparently the trophy has been discontinued and the show committee was unaware of it until presentation time.  He also wanted the board’s opinion regarding whether or not a junior could receive junior show credit if they were unable to be at the show (for instance, if they had already had to leave for college).  The committee decided to no change the current rules that require a junior to be present in order to receive junior show credit.  The only questions regarding rules dealt with the Senior Get of Sire and whether or not the class consists of 3 animals or 4.  There is no number listed in the national rules.  We allowed 3 for the class.  The new National judges list is now available from Holstein Association USA.  Potential judges for 2012:  Jack Lomeo, NY;   Chip Savage, MD; Kelly Barbee, NC.  Peter Waterman made the motion and upon a second by Steve Keene, the judge is to be selected by the show committee.
Breed Promotion – There will be no barn meeting this year and the committee did not feel we should ask sponsors to support our events too many times with the NE Convention scheduled for July in Maine.
Special Finance:  The committee discussed whether or not this should be continued.  Debbie pointed out it is our only source of income since we no longer have a state sale.  It was mentioned that each year the New Hampshire Holstein Association holds a super raffle.  Peter Waterman motioned that Duane Conant be appointed as chairman of the Special Finance Committee and it was so voted.
